Scholarship Application Instructions

These are the instructions for the revised Scholarship Application of the Winston Churchill Foundation of the United States.  The new application, the instructions, and the new letter of recommendation form are effective June 1, 2006, and supersede any other versions.

Applications for the Churchill Scholarships must be submitted to and endorsed by the appropriate representative at a college or university participating in the program.  Although the Churchill Application Form is now online, each applicant should fill out the form, print it, and submit it to the appropriate individual or committee, who will review the application and then nominate no more than two students for consideration.

A completed application consists of the following materials, all of which — except for the GRE scores — must be submitted through the Churchill Foundation Representative at your institution:

    ● The original and six copies of the University of Cambridge Application Form with a passport-size photograph attached to each copy.
The Application Form is available on the Cambridge Web site at http://www.admin.cam.ac.uk/offices/gradstud/admissions/forms/

    ● One signed copy of the Churchill Foundation Application Form

    ● Four letters of reference —two more than required for the Cambridge Application Form.  The Scholarship Recommendation Reports are available
in pdf format on the Foundation’s Web site.  Those whom you have selected for your recommendation should send their letters directly to your        campus Churchill Foundation Representative.

    ● One official transcript from each institution you have attended.  The transcript(s) should be also sent directly to your campus Churchill
       Foundation Representative.

    ● Graduate Record Examination Scores on the General Test and one Subject Test;  after 2006, the Subject test will no longer will be required.”

The Process of Review

The Foundation annually appoints an ad hoc Screening Committee comprised of former Churchill Scholars who are expert in representative disciplines.  That Committee reviews all applicants with great care, endorses those considered most qualified for a Scholarship, and ranks them.  While there are no formal restrictions on the number of Churchill Scholarships awarded in a single field of study, there are practical limitations based upon openings in programs and laboratories at the University of Cambridge.

Early in January applicants are notified whether they have been endorsed by the Screening Committee and will be scheduled, usually in the second week of January, for a brief interview by telephone with the Executive Director of the Foundation.

The Board of Graduate Studies and the appropriate departments at the University of Cambridge review the applications that have been endorsed by the Screening Committee, consider the availability of appropriate supervision and laboratory space, and decide who is eligible for admission to the University.

The Foundation makes final decisions on Churchill Scholarship winners and announces them no later than April 15th.
